Settling Inn

Everybody made it to Fredericksburg, by dark, through varied on Saturday. We all piled into Auslander German restaurant for beer and German food. The beer was great, but those Germans aren't known for their culinary accomplishments. We did not need to be eating anything considering we started eating about 7:30 am that morning; in our vehicle at least. Sausage balls at 7:30 right outside of Natchez, boudin at Don's Meat Market in Lafayette around 10:00 am, coffee and muffins at Beth's sisters in Sulphur, LA, lunch at Papadeaux's in Beaumont, TX around 1:00 pm, and then snacks (chex mix, chocolate chip cookies, brownies) all the way into Fredericksburg. All that before pedaling a single stroke.

Several ventured out, after dinner, to the wine tasting rooms all up and down Main St. There are at least a dozen of them along Main. So we sampled some of the selections and discussed routes, sitting near the pool, and freezing in the wind.

After much consternation, debating routes, and waiting for several individuals we left out on the Fredericksburg Stonewall loop Sunday morning after 10 am. Beth and I bailed half way through to get back for a lunch trip to Llano to see my brother and his family; good visit, good food (Coopers BBQ). The others completed the loop in the face of a 20mph wind. Nobody has stopped eating. We really need to pace ourselves.

Internet service at the Inn is painfully slow. I hope to get pictures uploaded later tonight. They are mostly pictures of the places we have eaten. Rain forecasted for Monday, so we will probably hit all the wineries. Later.

Maiden Post

Four days until we depart on another bicycle adventure. This will be our third trip with the same core group from the Natchez Bicycle Club. We have lost some along the way and picked up new faces too. Twenty in all on this trip with some cutting it short (Adam & David) and maybe another joining mid-week (Randy J.J.).

The two previous trips have been point A to point B trek's (no pun); Nashville to Natchez on the Trace, and north to south on the Blue Ridge Parkway. See links on the left for the respective blogs. This time, we can sleep in the same bed six nights straight; no packing clothes, gear, bikes, etc... We are staying at the Fredericksburg Inn http://www.fredericksburg-inn.com/ and from the looks of the website seems plush compared to some previous accomodations. Though I wouldn't want Dianne to think I was complaining. She has done a great job arranging all of the accomodations.

You might ask what are you going to do and where are you going to ride for six days in the same town. Well, this appears to be a cycling mecca right under our noses; actually 600 miles west. The local club website has 17 printable, detailed routes leaving from Fredericksburg varying in length from 7 to 88 miles. http://www.cycletexas.com/ The routes have local sponsors, include an elevation profile, categorized climbs, tips, and detailed information. This is something I think we need to do in Natchez. I really believe Natchez can be a cycling destination. We are spoiled that we can roll out of our driveways and choose from many, varied routes. I'll save that topic for another day.

For now, you are invited to join us virtually on this ride out west. Next time, you are invited literally to come with us for a spin.
